A Phobia is an intense fear of an object or situation disproportionate to the actual danger posed by that object or situation. Individuals with phobias can go to great lengths to avoid heir feared object. Anticipation of contact with the feared object can also cause severe distress.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than 10 million adults live with some kind of phobia.
Some examples of common phobias:
- Acrophobia, this is the fear of heights
- Agoraphobia, the fear open spaces, crowds, or leaving home
- Enclosed places; subway train, elevators, closets
- Arachnophobia, the fear of spiders
- Animals e.g., dogs, cats, birds.
CBT with Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) and Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) are very effective for phobias. When you come to BHNY we’ll structure your therapy utilizing these methods and any others relevant for your particular phobia.
