Depression is very common. In fact statistics show about 10% of Americans suffer from depression; and, just about everyone experiences some degree of depression at some point in life. There are different types of depression. Most commonly it occurs in reaction to an upsetting life event such as the breakup of a relationship, loss of a loved one, job loss, or a life stage crisis. Some of the more stubborn depressions are not necessarily tied to an external event; i.e. Dysthymia; and some of the more serious depressions such as Major Depression or Bipolar Disorder often require medication in addition to therapy. During a depression people report:
- Sadness or depressed mood
- Feeling hopeless and helpless
- Low Self Esteem, feelings of worthlessness
- Pessimistic about the present and future
- Difficulty concentrating, making decisions.
- Loss of interest in activities that are usually enjoyable.
- Loss of interest in sex.
- Lack of energy; feeling fatigued or slowed down.
- Insomnia, early morning awakening; or oversleeping.
- Appetite Loss or Overeating.
